Our children are at the core of the life of the school. Each one is valued as an individual with their own likes and dislikes, points of view, and desires. We approach each child with support as they unfold and tell us who they are.
Play-based learning permeates all aspects of our program. Children play to make sense of their world, to learn about themselves and each other, to develop language, to gain self-confidence and self-control and to understand and express their feelings.
We receive children, listen carefully and support the balance of each child emotionally, socially, cognitively and physically. The curriculum emerges from each of the classroom communities. It is often driven by child-led questioning which makes for a deeper connection to the subject matter with teachers and children working as partners.
Teachers use their knowledge of child development to guide their decisions on how to create an environment that invites rich and meaningful play in the classroom. Children have the opportunity to explore, collaborate and construct meaningful relationships and understandings of the world around them.
Our program provides a strong foundation for our children that will support future academic pursuit and a life time of learning. We hope that our students leave us knowing:
1980 - A New Vision in Chelsea
In the heart of Chelsea, The Fifteenth Street School—a vibrant, free school focused on creativity, individuality, and community—was struggling to keep its doors open. At a time when traditional practices and testing were gaining ground, the school’s commitment to self-regulation and freedom made it unique. When The Fifteenth Street School finally closed, its Board of Trustees decided to create something new, entrusting Jean Rosenberg, then a teacher and administrator, with building a program that would carry on these progressive values.
1981 - Chelsea Day School’s First Steps
On a bright September morning in 1981, Chelsea Day School opened its doors for the first time. Our founder Jean welcomed 23 two and three-year-olds, along with their parents, into a place where each child could grow in a natural way. Inspired by British educator A.S. Neill’s ideas of freedom and self-regulation, the school embraced a child-centered approach that balanced teacher guidance with child-led exploration, nurturing independence, decision-making, and self-confidence.
1981-2020 - Growing Together
What began with one class grew into a community of eight warm classrooms, inhabiting 4 different locations over the years. Our dedicated staff of 27 educators embodies Jean's vision in their daily practice. The inspiration we draw from Reggio Emilia resonates deeply with our progressive approach. Chelsea Day School remains a place where children’s curiosity and individuality are honored, encouraging them to explore, ask questions, and grow as members of a community.
2023 - A New Chapter
Today, Chelsea Day School begins a new chapter under the direction of Rachel Duda. With 22 years in early childhood education across NYC and international schools, Rachel brings warmth, expertise, and her experience as a mother of four to her leadership. She understands the joys and challenges of raising children and, like our families, believes in nurturing each child’s unique potential. Rachel is excited to carry Chelsea Day School’s mission forward, building on our cherished history while guiding us into the future.
Professional affiliations within the educational community at large have grown. They support our growth and collaboration with colleagues. Chelsea Day School is a member of NYSAIS (New York State Association of Independent Schools), ISAAGNY (The Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York), Early Steps and the Parents League of New York.
